when i start slicing i always tell myself slow down the backswing. this is my solution without getting too many thoughts going thru my head cuz trying to change too much will really send my game into a tailspin
My husband was having the same problem. He got so frustrated, he finally went to a golf pro at a driving range and took a couple of lessons. The pro had him hit a bunch of balls off of the tee and watched his swing, discovered what my husband was doing wrong, helped him correct it and now my hubby has a nice straight ball, as long as he remembers to do what the pro told him. The lessons were not that expensive and it only took a couple to straighten him out.
most likely it’s your swingpath, but it all depends on your experience level…among hundreds of other factors…
Your best bet is to ask someone at the range/course(Preferably a decent golfer) to watch you swing, they will be able to help you much better than I.
If the problem is your swingpath, concentrate on keeping your head steady through your shot, and not “coming over the top” when you begin your downswing. (Hands follow shoulders, shoulders follow hips.)
Lacking the ability to see what the actual cause of your slice is…….I’d advise you to see a teaching pro for a lesson or two. The causes of a slice are multiple. All we can do is shotgun ideas at you
First of all, I’m a golf instructor. I own a golf instruction facility and Arkansas Largest golf store. A slice is caused by a clubface that is open with a swing path that is usually comming from the outside to in, meaning the club is moving toward your feet slightly before, durring, and after impact. One of my favorite drills to stop this is called the “gate” drill. You will need 3 golf balls to do it. The first one is the one your going to hit, place it normallin on the groung. The second should be placed two inches in front of that ball and then five inches toward your feet. The third should be placed two inches behind the ball then five inches away from your feet. Now hit the original first ball, the other two balls will act as guides or gates that you should be able to swing through without hitting. Notice to do this you will have to come from the inside. You still don’t want to force the issue, be relaxed and let your arms be swung freely through the gates by the rotation of your body. Hope this helps, it’s simple and it works.
close your face a little more, try to hit through, don’t cut upwards.
Is it a straight right shot or a banana slice? If it is a banana it means you are coming out to in. If it’s straight right you are leaving the club face open. Anyway, my teaching pro taught me this drill which basically rid me of my slice. imagine a number 8 on the ground, position the ball on where the lines intersect. when you make a swing, draw the number 8 starting with the outer line, meaning you swing away your body and up (making sure you have made a good shoulder turn) on the down swing you try and come from the inside (making sure that you maintain your spine angle all through out the swing and rotate your fore arm through the ball.) seems like too many thoughts but make a few swing and feel the sensation. Your slice will be gone in a jiffy.
If it is a straight right shot. just concentrate on forearm rotation on your swing. Hope this could help your game.
this is like asking, ‘my car keeps getting into accidents, why?’
seriously there are many possible reasons you’re hitting the ball to the right.
get some lessons, get a book, dvd, or go to youtube and type in tiger woods and you’ll get some free advice.
generally its a good idea to start with the basic ‘pre swing’ basics ANY golfer can do. Start with the grip. With a bad grip you’re constantly compensating. At first it will feel awkward to change your grip substantially, but its worth the effort. Very few good golfers have bad grips.
Then work on your alignment. Many golfers think they should line the toes of their feet, or shoulders to the hole/target which is wrong. The target line is through the ball, not your feet. Laying clubs down on the ground at a driving range is a good way to get used to lining up properly.
Alignment is closely related to your stance and ball position. Again, you too can look like Tiger Woods BEFORE your swing starts!
So, why not? Use a mirror, have a friend take photos of you. Get your swing started correctly.
Now comes the hard part, the actual swing…i wont go into it here…too many variables. Get some help, take a lessons package and be willing to practice. Lessons wont help if you dont practice.
Good luck. I find the ‘secret to golf’ about once a year!!! Its never ending.
Your body is ahead of the club, leaving it open, causing a slice… pause a bit at the top of your backswing, giving your club time to get in sync with your body.
fastest way to solve this is try moving your back foot 6 to 8 inches outward having an offset foot stance, this will correct your sweeping swing…….. give it a try……
On the down swing, try to hit your right ankle on the way down. This is impossible but will make you hit the INSIDE of the golf ball and make you swing towards first base. Sound crazy?? Try it… remember, you are not trying to hit directly behind the golf ball, you are trying to hit the side of the ball facing you. This will create a beautiful draw and you will enjoy the distance also.
Fixing your slice will take a little bit of time but it will work.
This is for RIGHT HITTERS!!!!
There are many things to look at when you are swinging.
1. At the top of your back swing check to see if your right arm(bicep) is parallel to the ground. It most likely is to high.
2. At impact your hands should with aligned with your hips. (Your hips may be turning to early or sliding.)
3. Make sure the ball is on your right heel with a driver before you swing, 3 wood a little left but not much etc.
4. If you want to keep your swing the same try taking a stronger grip (hands more on the right side of the grip) because your hands aren’t rotating around enough.
5. Last thing is to make sure you aren’t swinging overboard. the shaft of your club should be parallel to the ground.
Some Drill are:
1. putting a towel under your right arm and swing backwards keeping there until the follow through to create muscle memory on keeping your right arm close to your side on the down swing.
2. Set a poll into the ground a half of an inch off your left hip and swing. if your hips knock it then you are sliding your hips.
Good Luck!
